Summer has begun and you’re busy making
travel plans. You’ve been working on your beach body all spring, and now
you’re worried you may undo all of that hard work with a vacation full
of frozen margaritas, fried seafood, and delicious desserts. Follow
these tips for how to eat healthy on vacation so you can enjoy yourself
without going completely overboard.
Stock Up On Snacks
Bring fruits, vegetables, nuts, popcorn or other healthy snack items
for the plane ride, car trip, and other times throughout your vacation.
This will help you avoid having to buy something every time you’re
hungry, and these are much healthier options than the candy or chips
you’ll find in a convenience store.
Eat Half, Save Half
A good way to indulge in a delicious meal without overdoing it is to
only eat half of your entrée and take the other half home for your lunch
the next day. With the
portion sizes
that many restaurants serve these days, half an entrée is usually more
than enough for a meal, especially with any sides, bread, and dessert
that might come with it.
Order Appetizers
Ordering appetizers to split instead of an entrée is a great way to
limit portion sizes. If you’re with a group of four, order six
appetizers and split them all. This should be more than enough food to
constitute a meal, plus you all get to sample a variety of items!
Snack First
Keep healthy snacks on hand to eat before going out for a meal. If
you have some apple slices or carrot sticks to curb your hunger, you’ll
be less likely to splurge on extra courses that you don’t really need.
Stick With Red Wine
Many of us like to indulge in an adult beverage every now and then,
especially on vacation. Instead of ordering an oversized piña colada at
the pool every day, stick with
red wine at dinner. It has fewer calories and less sugar. Of course, avoiding alcoholic beverages altogether would be even better!
Limit Dining Out
This can be difficult depending on the vacation you take, but try to
limit dining out to one meal per day. At the beginning of your vacation,
buy some cereal, milk, bread and sandwich fixings to keep in your hotel
room. Eat breakfast before leaving for the day, and pack a healthy
sandwich for lunch if you will be out all day. Not only will this help
balance out the effects of indulging at dinner, but it will save you
time and money as well.
Stay Hydrated
It’s easy to get dehydrated on vacation, especially in warmer
climates. Make sure you bring plenty of water if you’ll be out all day,
and drink extra if you’re spending a long time in the sun or walking a
lot. Coconut water is also a great source of hydration – it can help
you refuel on electrolytes and is much healthier than sports drinks.
