The Kurumbar (Kurumbar-plural, kurumban- singular ) are a scheduled tribe inhabiting Attappady valley Mannarghat taluk Palghat district. They are also found sparingly distributed in the adjascent Nilgiri areas of Tamil Nadu . They subsist on slash and burn cultivation, minor forest produce collection and animal husbandry . Their tongue is more akin to Tamil with large admixtureof Malayalam. According to the 1981 Census their population in the valley numbered 1283. Literacy among them is 1.86 percent. They have been identified as a primitive tribe by Government of India in 1976 . consequently , a number of development measures have been undertaken to raise their lot.
